At 7pm the day before Easter 2025, Karl and Tiffany stood in their kitchen eating dinner and preparing holiday dessert when a car drove into their house!

Tiffany furiously stomped outside to confront the inebriated driver when she immediately noticed the gas leak. The driver hit the gas meter below the kitchen window on the wall where Karl was leaning.

Within 4 minutes they had reported the leak and safely got their cats from the house. There was a five block evacuation and lockdown, and what seemed like every police officer and fire fighter came through their home to assess the damage.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Unfortunately, they are still under construction ten months later and the driver was underinsured.

Below are photos from day of accident through February 2026. We are living in our home since as short term housing inventory in our area is low. We joke that while we are relegated to the upstairs: we are ghosts in our own home, a partition keeping our cats and us from downstairs. Still no kitchen and we still wash dishes in our bathtub.

The driver was passed out at the wheel, and when he hit the house it sounded like a train derailed. It was so loud! He crossed two lanes of oncoming traffic, jumped the sidewalk, and went through two neighbors’ yards and chainlink fences, knocking down posts buried in concrete underground. The drywall in our kitchen was knocked off the studs by 4-6” in places and items from the cabinets and counters ejected around SIX FEET into the kitchen and living room! In addition to downstairs damage, upstairs on the backside of the house, Tiffany’s office-balcony door burst open and off kilter.

While we have no kitchen, we eat a lot of take out (Taco Time primarily) and have access to our microwave and old refrigerator. In the construction process we have had some delightful finds: the original back of the house in the kitchen as well as a small section of original hardwood floors in the living room that we plan on restoring! Our home was built in 1943, and went through several additions over the century, we love seeing the original parts where people lived.

We had our heat and hot water restored with our gas replumb in October 2025 after a long 6 months of showering at the gym. The hole in the side of the house was repaired around the same time. It was refreshing to have insulation installed in December 2025 and drywall in the kitchen January 2026. Our kitchen cabinets are set to be delivered beginning of March 2026.

We’re are hoping to have our home back together by the anniversary of the accident.
